Why do I get an Application Error or General Protection Fault (GPF) when I try to mail-merge in Windows NT or 2000?
** This only applies to Professional Investigator v3 or earlier ** Click here to upgrade to the latest version,
which will solve this problem.
When you use Professional Investigator's mail-merge facility with Microsoft Word, Professional Investigator
sends commands and data to Word using Object Linking & Embedding (OLE) and Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). These two services are provided by your operating system, namely, Windows.
Because Professional Investigator v3 is a 16-bit program, they work fine in Windows 95, 98 and ME, which are hybrid operating systems, offering both 32-bit and 16-bit functionality. Windows NT and Windows 2000 (which is simply the latest version of Windows NT) are 32-bit throughout, and so cannot support services such as OLE and DDE, in a 16-bit environment.
To allow users of Windows NT and Windows 2000 to mail-merge successfully with Microsoft Word, we have written a separate 32-bit mail-merge module. You should only download this
module if you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, and are experiencing problems.
Click here to download the 32-bit mail-merge module
This module will install into your Professional Investigator folder, and will place a new icon on your desktop, and in the Professional Investigator section of your Windows Start
menu.
Note:
This mail-merge error is entirely separate to the 'wow32' problem described in FAQ029. If you see an error saying, 'PI_MAIN has caused an access violation in WOW32.DLL...' in Windows 2000, please see FAQ029 for more information and a solution.
Addendum:
Professional Investigator v3.0g
and above now checks your Windows version, and will disable the internal mail-merge facility if it detects that you are running under Windows NT or 2000. This should stop any errors caused by inadvertently using the internal mail-merge rather than this new module. Click here to download the latest version.
